Meet the 2018 DSEM Writing Fellows! Each of these fellows works closely with their professor in one of the DSEM classes. Holding office hours, designing workshops, and supporting student-professor relationships are just a few of the many hats that Writing Fellows wear. Sofia Amorim
English Major, Creative Writing Minor
“I became a Writing Fellow to get more practice in writing instruction, but mostly because I value student writing, and working with them on developing their thoughts and ideas.”
Nina Campli
Anthropology and German Major, Music Minor
I like being a Writing Fellow because I love helping people learn new things. Being a Writing Fellow not only helps the students learn important tools for writing but also how to navigate college.
Stephanie DeFronzo
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Major
Being a writing fellow, I am able to simultaneously teach and learn. It is common knowledge that if you are teaching or helping another person with something, you probably know a bit about it. However, no matter your skill level, it is not talked about enough how much a teacher can learn from their student. The feeling of reading a student’s essay and learning something new, about phrasing or a topic, is a wondrous feeling. It’s amazing to realize how much we can learn from one another, no matter how different we seem to be.
Katelynn Fleming
Physics and Spanish Major, Mathematics Minor
I like having the opportunity to work with other students. I have learned a lot about writing for myself through analyzing their work and finding ways to help elucidate a tough concept. I hope having me as a resource is helpful to them and they are benefitting from the collaborative learning environment as well.
Leanne Fogarty
Neuroscience Major, Italian Minor
I became a Writing Fellow because I like helping others and I wanted to share my knowledge of organized scientific writing with first-year students.
Josh Levine-Ritterman
Philosophy Major, History Minor
I enjoy being able to help my fellow students make their writing better, since it’s such an important part of being both a student and an academic as a whole.
Molly Murphy
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Major
I became a writing fellow because I wanted to challenge myself. Before becoming a fellow I had done tutoring before, but the unique opportunity of being in the classroom with my students every day was something I had never done, and that scared me. Additionally, I was called to be a Writing fellow because writing was one of the hardest things I had to learn when I came to college, and I was excited by the opportunity to help ease that transition for other first-year students.
John Rinald
Neuroscience and Philosophy Major, Biochemistry Minor
I like getting to know the students in my class, and helping them understand how much more interesting it is to write in college as opposed to what they know in high school. I’ve also enjoyed getting to learn new things in the DSEM from the instructor and the class discussions!
Caitlin Shannon
Spanish and Music Major, English Minor
Honestly I became a Writing Fellow because my DSEM professor asked me to and I don’t know how to say no. The reason I’ve come back for three years now is how much it has helped me to grow as a writer, student, and member of the Drew community.
Olivia Snaza
Political Science Major, Middle Easter Studies Minor with Arabic Concentration
I love giving back a really important resource that was given to me my first semester on campus. Writing Fellows can provide academic assistance but in a lot of cases I’m also helping my students to navigate Drew as a whole and it has been so exciting to watch them flourish.

I like being a Writing Fellow because I feel like I learn as much as I teach, so for every problem that the students have, I’m also learning how to solve it.
Haley Watson
English and Communications Major, Holocaust Studies and BA/MAT Minor
I became a writing fellow because I wanted to gain first-hand experience in helping students one-on-one and leading class discussions and workshops during my undergraduate education.
Abbie Young
Sociology and Women’s and Gender Studies Major, Business Minor
I like getting to help students become the best writers they can be. It is really exciting when a concept clicks in a student’s brain and you can see the wheels start to turn, and the light bulb come on when they finally understand something. Writing is one of the best forms of expression and getting your thoughts out, so helping someone with that process is really exciting too.
