FAQ

• Students applying to Ph.D.  programs at Drew University must complete the GRE. GRE requirements for masters level (and other doctoral) programs vary based on degree. Refer to individual program pages for more specific application requirements.

*Due to COVID-19:

• GRE/GMAT standardized testing requirements will be optional for all “Masters” programs until further notice.
• International students are still required to submit passing scores on the TOEFL or IELTS tests in order to meet the English language proficiency requirement.

• Masters level proof of English language proficiency is required for students who  studied in a country where English is not the mode of instruction. International applicants must submit either a TOEFL or IELTS score in order to be considered for admission. Scores of no older than five years are accepted. To present a competitive application, a student should have a minimum score of 80. The English Proficiency Requirement is waived if you come from any of these listed countries. International students may be required to attend a Summer English Language Program.

• PhD international applicants are required to take both the TOEFL and the GRE. Scores no older than five years are accepted. To present a competitive application, a student should have a minimum score of 80. The TOEFL is waived if you come from any of these listed countries.

Application requirements vary based on degree program and applicants are encouraged to look at specific requirements on the school’s program page. All programs require students to submit official transcripts of all accredited higher education institutions, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement.

• Theological School (non-Ph.D.) tuition is $733/credit. Students admitted into the Ph.D. in the Graduate Division of Religion receive a full tuition scholarship. Drew offers merit-based scholarships for all Masters level degree programs as well. The $733/credit figure does not take into account any merit-based scholarship that you receive from Drew. Drew does not offer any merit-based scholarships for the Doctor of Ministry degree. A detailed breakdown of tuition and fees can be found here.

• CSGS tuition is $1351/credit for all programs except Teacher Education. Tuition for Teacher Education programs is $873/credit.

• Full-time students can complete the Master of Divinity program in 3 years. The Theological School’s Master of Arts in Religion and Master of Arts in Theology and Ministry will take 2 years and the Masters of Sacred Theology is a one year program. Ph.D. students in the Graduate Division of Religion are expected to complete their studies between 5 and 7 years.

• Time frames are based upon Full-Time status. Master of Arts in Teaching will take 1 year. Master of Education will take approximately 18+ months. Master of Letters and Master of Medical Humanities will take 2 – 5 years. Master of Arts in History & Culture will take 2 years; History & Culture PhD will take 5-7 years. Master of Data Analytics and Master of Finance will take 1 year to complete. Please refer to specific programs for exact information.

• Prospective students applying to graduate programs at Drew do not need to submit a separate application for merit-based scholarships. The student will be considered for all institutional scholarships based on their application to either Drew Theological School or the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies.

• The Theological School recently implemented a curriculum transformation that focused on making our curriculum more flexible for students managing work, family, and life commitments outside of their educational pursuits. This can take the form of online classes, hybrid formats, or series of flexible intensive formats.

• Caspersen School of Graduate Studies offers a flexible schedule with working professionals in mind. Most classes take place after 4:00pm and some programs offer course in hybrid formats.

• Yes. All inquiries about student housing should be directed to the Housing office. Once a student accepts their offer of admission they can reserve campus housing for the upcoming semester.

• Yes. After a student accepts their offer of admission to Drew University they are automatically registered for Drew’s student health plan. If a student already has health insurance they must complete a Drew health insurance waiver in the first three weeks of the semester.

• The Theological School does not have a minimum GPA (for any degree program) or a minimum GRE score (for Ph.D. applicants). That said, applicants are evaluated on the merit of their overall file and a lower GPA or GRE could impact admission or their qualification for merit-based scholarships.
• CSGS have an expectation of a 3.0 minimum GPA. CSGS does not have a minimum GRE score. That said, applicants are evaluated on the merit of their overall file and a low GPA or GRE could impact admission or their qualification for merit-based scholarships. For programs that accept the GMAT (MS in Data Analytics and the MS in Finance) the minimum score is 500.

• This waiver only applies to the Fall 2020 entering class
• International students are still required to submit passing scores on the TOEFL or IELTS tests in order to meet the English language proficiency requirement.

• Theological School masters applicants for the Spring semester should submit all of their materials by December 1st. International students should submit all materials by October 1st. Ph.D. applicants should submit all of their materials by December 15th for the upcoming Fall semester. Masters students applying for the Fall semester should turn in their materials by June 1st (April 1st for international students).
• Although CSGS reads most program applications(except History & Culture Ph.D.) on a rolling admission basis, the preferred deadlines are as follows:

• Fall – June 1 (Priority deadline – April 1)
• Spring – December 1 (Priority deadline – November 1)

To be considered for the preferred deadlines, applications must  be complete with all required materials.

History & Culture Ph.D applicants must submit all materials by February 1st for Fall 2020.

MAT Summer deadline is February 1st.

• No. Applicants can submit their application form before their supplemental items are sent to our office. As soon as the Graduate Admissions office receives all of the applicant’s supplemental items the file will be sent over for faculty review.

• Click here for a description of the various supplement documents needed for your program. If applicants have any problems when it comes to uploading their supplemental items, email the Graduate Admissions office at [email protected].

• Once an applicant has submitted their application form they will be taken to a page where they can upload supplemental items such as their letters of recommendation and personal statement. Official transcripts should be requested from the institution themselves and they should be mailed in a sealed envelope to Drew University directly from the school. If applicants have any problems when it comes to uploading their supplemental items, email the Graduate Admissions office at [email protected].

• Yes! Scheduling a visit is the best way for prospective students to meet an admissions counselor, connect with current faculty and students, or sit in on a class. We recommend a campus visit for anyone who is discerning graduate education at Drew University.

• The Theological School does accept transfer credit. Transfer credit evaluations will occur after a student is offered admission through Hilary McKane in the Graduate Academic Services office.
• CSGS may accept up to six (6) transfer credits with the exception of the Master Letters program. Transfer credit evaluations will occur after a student is offered admission through Hilary McKane in the Graduate Academic Services office.

• Students can defer their admission to Drew University up to two semesters by requesting a defer of admission form from [email protected]. Once a student has deferred their admission a full year they will be asked to reapply for admission to either the Theological School or the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies.
• NOTE: Deferrals are not granted for the PhD degree.

• Some doctoral programs at Drew offer graduate assistantships over the course of your degree program. Reach out to program faculty in order to learn more about these opportunities.

• Yes. Students interested in taking classes as a non-degree student should submit a non-degree application form for their respective school. Once your application is submitted an admissions counselor will follow up with you regarding next steps.

• Once you are admitted into a degree program at Drew the next step is to pay your non-refundable $300 enrollment deposit! Once the deposit is paid you will hear from the Director of Graduate Academic Services with information regarding registration, orientation, and your academic advisor.
