How to submit your thesis/dissertation to ProQuest

  1. Submit an ETD Release form.
  2. Go to ProQuest’s ETD Administrator and click the “create your account” link. Complete the form and click “Create Account.” You will receive a confirmation email from etdadministrator@proquest.com. Click on the “confirm your account” link in that email.
  3. Instructions : Read as much or as little of the “Instructions” as you wish (you can always return to this page later by clicking on the “Instructions” link in the menu on the left side of the screen.) When you are ready click the “Continue” button at the bottom of the page.
  4. PQ publishing options : Select either Traditional or Open Access publishing. You can also indicate if you do or do not want search engines to discover your work through ProQuest. If you wish to embargo your work select “No” under “Delaying release in ProQuest” and select a time period. If you want an embargo of more than two years indicate that in the “Notes to administrator” section (step #10 below.)
  5. ProQuest/UMI agreement : The publishing agreement that you selected will appear on the screen. Read it through to the end and click “Accept.”
  6. Contact Information : Complete and/or correct your contact information.
  7. Dissertation/Thesis Details : Complete the form and click “save and continue.”
  8. PDF : Follow the instructions to convert your dissertation to a PDF file. Click the “Choose File” button and double-click the PDF’s filename. Indicate whether or not you have copyright permission documents to submit and click “Save & Continue.”
  9. Supplemental Files (optional) : Follow the instructions if you wish to include files other than your PDF and click “Save & Continue.”
  10. Notes to Administrator (optional) : Enter any notes or messages that you want the ETD administrator to see and click “Save & Continue.”
  11. Register U.S. Copyright : Once your dissertation is in a fixed form the copyright belongs to you; it is not necessary to register for copyright in order for the material to be copyrighted to you. ProQuest will file for copyright registration on your behalf, if you wish, for a fee or you can register your copyright yourself, for a lesser fee, by going to the U.S. Copyright Office. If your answer to question #1 is “No” and you wish to register for copyright yourself your answer to question #2 should be “Do not file for copyright.” Click “Save & Continue.”
  12. Order copies : ProQuest will print and bind copies of your dissertation, if you wish, for a fee. Click on either “Continue with
order” or “Decline – do not order.”
  13. Submit or Submit & Pay : Review your Submission Summary. Corrections can be made by clicking on the “Change” links or by clicking on the links in the menu on the left side of the screen. When you are satisfied that everything is correct:
    • Submit : Click “Submit Dissertation/Thesis.”
    • or Submit & Pay : if you selected anything that costs money (open access publishing, copyright registration, or binding) click “Continue with submission.” To pay any fees click “Pay with credit card.” and complete the form. Click “Submit Dissertation/Thesis & Pay.”

You will receive an email confirming your submission. After it has been reviewed by the office of Graduate Academic Services you will receive another email informing you that your dissertation has been accepted for publication.

Please don’t hesitate to contact Guy Dobson, Systems Librarian, via phone (973-408-3207) or email (gdobson@drew.edu) if you have any questions about the online submission process.
