Drew Theological School Professor Continues his Philosophy in Retirement

Robert Corrington founded the Institute of Ecstatic Naturalism

January 2020 — Robert Corrington, developer of the philosophy of ecstatic naturalism and the Henry Anson Buttz Professor of Philosophical Theology at Drew Theological School, has retired after serving the community for 30 years.

Corrington founded the Institute of Ecstatic Naturalism at Drew, which hosts annual events that explore his unique portrayal of nature and the human unconsciousness through presentations and papers from scholars and students as far reaching as Korea.

As Corrington settles into his retirement, he reflected on his career at Drew and his journey ahead.

Settling in The Forest
Corrington arrived at Drew in 1977 as a Master of Philosophy student, and proceeded to earn his PhD in Theological and Religious Studies. After gaining teaching experience in the philosophy departments at Penn State and the College of William and Mary, Corrington returned to Drew Theological in 1990 as a professor of Philosophical Theology.

"I will miss teaching on the graduate level because of the intensity and sophistication of the discussions and writings by the students and my colleagues."

What He Will Miss
“I will miss teaching on the graduate level because of the intensity and sophistication of the discussions and writings by the students and my colleagues,” said Corrington. “Further, I will miss being exposed to the wisdom and amazing talent of my colleagues.”

Corrington’s Legacy
“I am most proud of creating my own philosophy of ecstatic naturalism in twelve books and many articles,” said Corrington of his work. The Tenth International Congress on Ecstatic Naturalism will take place in April 2020 at Drew.

What’s Next for Corrington?
Not surprisingly, Corrington will continue to write and further develop his philosophy in retirement. In addition to his twelve books and countless articles, Corrington has four additional anthologies in print or forthcoming, as well as a full-length book nearing completion, Nature Naturing: An Essay in Philosophical Cosmology.

Corrington will continue to voice his deep concern for the climate crisis through his blog. He will be feted with a retirement celebration in Spring 2020 at Drew.
