The two-time Drew Theological School alum appointed as Administrative Law Judge
September 2024 – This summer, two-time Drew Theological School alum Kimberly Holmes T’11,’17 was officially sworn in as an administrative law judge for the State of New Jersey.
Holmes, who earned her Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry from the Theological School, followed a non-traditional path. She utilized her education and experience for the betterment of New Jersey through her previous service as the Assistant Commissioner and Chief of Staff at the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA).
Following her work in public service at the DCA, Holmes was nominated to serve as an administrative law judge by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, later confirmed by the Senate.
“Drew prepared me for my recent appointment to the bench as an Administrative Law Judge in three ways,” said Holmes. “First, the appreciation of diverse thoughts through group assignments in the DMin program. Second, the ability to relate to others by engaging in scholarly writing and demonstrating a correlation to your point of view or not.”
“And third, the reflective moments of sitting with the biblical text and waiting for the aha moment was transformational, ” continued Holmes. “These three valuable lessons are forever locked in my heart and mind as I serve as a judge. I’m eternally grateful to Drew because I learned, stretched myself, and grew as a better me.”
She attributes part of her success from living in the community she serves. A Newark resident for over 20 years, and a fellow in the Leadership in Newark program give Holmes the opportunity to learn more and become directly involved in the community.
Holmes returned to her two-time alma mater as an adjunct professor at the Theological School in both the DMin and MDiv programs. She earned her JD from Seton Hall University of Law and is currently serving in ministry at St. Luke Baptist Church in New York City.
Executive Director of Graduate Admissions Kevin D. Miller T’03,08 gave the invocation during the official swearing in ceremony, which took place at the historic Essex County Courthouse. A reception followed the ceremony, filled with Drew alums and community members.
