The Kathryn Stanley Scholars Program was endowed in 1994 by family members and friends to honor Kathryn Stanley, a Drew French major. Awarded annually to a Drew student or students of high merit who are majoring or minoring in French toward a semester of study in France, or to a French student toward a semester of study at Drew.

Kathryn Stanley was born July 24, 1970. She lived and was educated in Madison. During her short lifetime she managed to overcome many obstacles and make an indelible impression on all she met. In her last 10 years, she devoted herself to her love of life and especially her enthusiasm for all components of the French culture. She was majoring in French at Drew University, where she showed a profound sense of the language. Never one to be complacent, Katy decided to improve her knowledge of French and spent a semester in Europe, mostly in France, in 1992. She had a uniquely broad curiosity for everything that was French: her field of interests ranged from art history to contemporary politics. In spring 1993 she was awarded a special college grant for her efforts in organizing many cultural events at the Drew Francophone House. During that semester she treated her peers to such diverse occasions as Mardi-Gras, a Tunisian soirée, a career evening, and informal discussions about French cinema, politics and the status of women in francophone cultures. Before she was killed on June 10, 1993 in an automobile accident, she had made plans to return to France in the fall of 1993 and study language and literature at the Université de Rennes. Katy was an exceptional person—determined, giving and overwhelmingly kind. She was always willing to help anyone, in any situation. She had the ability to find any French visitor in New Jersey and personally guarantee a loving and memorable stay.

It is hoped that this scholarship program will continue her spirit, help better the understanding of Americans in France and make a warm welcome to French students who visit here.
