Italian Language, Art, Culture and Community-Based Learning in Orvieto and Florence

Orvieto, located in the Umbria region known as the “Green Heart of Italy,” is recognized as one of the world’s most beautiful towns with its breathtaking panoramas, hills, vineyards, olive trees and medieval towers. Halfway between Rome and Florence, it is the perfect site to learn Italian, and Italian history and culture. Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance, is a beautiful city rich in history and culture. You will learn/improve your Italian language skills as well as participate in cooking classes, art workshops, fashion seminars and community-based learning experiences with local volunteer organizations. Classes will be held at the renowned Study Abroad Programs in Italy School.

About The Program

This four-week program offers up to 8 credits in language and culture courses allowing you to explore Italian history and culture through three of the major areas for which Italy is famous in the world: Arts, Fashion, and Food. Activities will include cooking classes, art workshops, fashion seminars, projects, cultural excursions and exchanges with native speakers. There will also be a Community-Based Learning component that will give students the possibility to interact with local volunteer organizations in order to increase their civic, cultural and linguistic understanding while contributing to the mission of the organizations. The courses will help not only students who plan to minor or major in Italian, but also students who are interested in the culture and lifestyle of Italy, or just want to complete the language or Gen. Ed. requirements.

Credits earned will apply towards a Drew degree and can be used for the  General Education requirements, the Italian major and minor.

Program Director

Dr. Emanuele Occhipinti, Professor and Director of the Italian Program, will supervise and coordinate all educational (teaching, syllabi, tests and final grades) and extracurricular activities, such as field trips, museum tours, and the weekend in Florence. He will always be available on site to ensure students’ general welfare.

Food, Culture, & Sustainability in Tuscany

Food, Culture, & Sustainability in Tuscany

This new 4-week interdisciplinary program (offered in English) will allow students to use site-based experiences and interact with natives in order to explore the interplay among food, culture, and sustainability through readings, lectures, and workshops. Students will stay in the beautiful city of Siena, in the heart of Tuscany, where cultural traditions are tied to the rich bounty of the natural environment. There will be day trips to Chianti and San Gimignano, and a three-day stay in Bologna, the food capital of Italy. Activities will include cooking classes, visits to farms and food production companies. The 8-credit courses will help not only students who plan to minor or major in Italian, but also students of English, Food Studies, Environmental Science and Sustainability, or students planning careers in tourism, food science, and natural resources management.

Course Selection

The 8 Credits earned will apply towards a Drew degree and can be used for the General Education requirements, the Italian, English and ESS majors and minors, Business majors and minors.

Course Selection

Students will enroll in ITAL 399 – Short-Term Program Seminar: Italian Culture (4 credits) Requirements Satisfied: Breadth: Interdisciplinary, Breadth: Humanities, Diversity: International, Off-Campus Experience, Italian major and minor. The unique structure of this program offers the possibility to become acquainted with one of the most fascinating areas in Italy, allowing students to discover and explore the “Magna Graecia” using a strong experiential approach. Teaching will be connected to multiple areas of inquiry (literary, historical, geographical, ethno- anthropological, gastronomical, and cultural) aiming to provide students with the tools to evaluate the modern world through the study of Western civilization. Classes will be held at the Fondazione Alario per Elea-Velia ONLUS – Ascea, Italy (near Salerno).

What is included:

ALL INCLUDED but airfare, incidentals and personal expenses
